Bloomin' Winter!

It's 'bloomin' winter outside! I've currently got 4 new inches of snow here in the US Midwest, and see no end in sight, or any signs of Spring arriving very soon.

I had a neighbor pass away during the Fall this year, which ate away the time I had left to tend to my 2,000 square foot flowergarden chores. If you're not a gardener, I'll let you know that the Fall is a pretty busy time for us, as it is the perfect time to move perennial plants to another spot, and plant new perennial plants.

Fall's weather gives a plant enough time to get over the shock of being transplanted, and get started on establishing roots before the frost comes, followed closely by the winter freeze.

Now, I'm just guessing, but I have around 25 perennial plants, half of them roses, that didn't get planted before the hard frost.

My daughter-in-law and I have completely stripped my family room; carpet, walls, ceiling, everything; so I am using that space to keep the plants and flowers alive until Spring. I did take 3 of the rose bushes and placed them in my bedroom, so I could keep an eye on them, as they were very delicate.

The reason we stripped my family room? I need a new roof. I had water damage so bad that mold was growing. But it's a GOOD thing! Now I'm going to get an inside greenhouse!

Anyway, as per the title to this thing, besides using a British term, I've got blooms! Not only has 1 of the delicate peach colored roses bloomed, but my 7 or so Christmas Cactus are starting to bloom too. (they have a mind and timing of their own you know!)

The first, and second Christmas Cactus' are both peach colored too, so it's just "peachy" here in the 17 degrees winter weather!

You just wait and see what I have when my indoor greenhouse is done! Wooo-Hooo!

Growing up we had a nice flower garden at the front of the house, and a large garden at the back too. During the winter my Mum would pot all of the Geranium plants, and keep them in the wooden shed at the back of the garden, where the temperature was enough above freezing to keep them alive. She would then plant them outside again in the spring time.

Of course with the winter that we had here in the South of England last year, and even worse this year, I wonder if they would have survived, since we have had a week of temperatures that were freezing or below, very rare for us.
